A Wonderful Japanese Cultural Experience for a Family Visiting Kyoto

2026.03.13
category customer's opinions

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming a lovely family visiting Japan from Switzerland to AriHana Kyoto.

Their two daughters, ages 7 and 4, were visiting Japan for the very first time and were very curious about traditional Japanese toys and cultural activities. Among all the experiences, they especially loved origami. Even though it was their first time, they eagerly challenged themselves to fold a spinning origami top. They completed it beautifully and were surprisingly skillful!

They also tried Japanese calligraphy (Shodo). We helped them convert their names into Kanji, and they carefully wrote them with a brush on a traditional Japanese uchiwa fan. With guidance from our staff, they created wonderful personalized fans to take home as special souvenirs from Kyoto.

AriHana Kyoto is a perfect place for families visiting Japan who want to experience Japanese culture in a fun and easy way. Our indoor kids activity space in Kyoto is conveniently located near Kiyomizu-dera and Sanjusangendo Temple, making it an ideal stop during your Kyoto sightseeing.

Our space is popular for:

A Heartwarming Moment at AriHana Kyoto – Family Memories from Around the World

category customer's opinions

At AriHana Kyoto, we are always touched by the kindness of families visiting from around the world. 🌏

Many guests leave us beautiful memories.
Children sometimes write us little letters saying, “That was so fun! Thank you!” or give us origami they folded themselves as a gift.

Adults are also incredibly thoughtful. Some guests have shared special souvenirs such as traditional spinning tops made by their grandparents, or handmade origami cards with warm messages.

Yesterday, we had another unforgettable encounter.
A newly married couple visiting from Canada on their honeymoon told me,
“Meeting you made us happy, so we would like to give you a lucky coin.”

They gave me a coin from their home country as a small charm for good luck.
Moments like this become precious treasures for us.

AriHana Kyoto truly feels like a place filled with happiness.
We are deeply grateful to every guest who visits. 💛

Try a Traditional Japanese Game: Tosenkyo in Kyoto! 🇯🇵

2026.03.11
category staff blog

We recently added a new traditional toy to our collection — Tosenkyo, a classic and elegant Japanese fan-throwing game.

Tosenkyo is a traditional Japanese game that has been enjoyed for centuries. It was especially popular in Kyoto entertainment culture, where adults played it with geiko and maiko.

The rules are simple but surprisingly exciting.

Players throw a folding fan toward a small target called a “butterfly” placed on a box.
Points are scored depending on how the fan and the target fall after the throw. The different shapes they create have poetic names, making the game both playful and artistic.

Even just hitting the butterfly or knocking it down creates a lot of excitement!

Since this is a traditional game that is not easy to experience elsewhere, we invite you to try this unique Japanese cultural activity in Kyoto.

At AriHana Kyoto, located near Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Sanjusangendo, we offer a family-friendly indoor play space where both children and adults can enjoy traditional Japanese culture together.

Visitors from all over the world come to enjoy:

• Traditional Japanese games and toys
• Hands-on cultural experiences
• Fun activities for kids and adults

It’s a great place for:

Rainy day or hot day sightseeing in Kyoto

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the 1st anniversary event at DoubleTree by Hilton Kyoto Station. It’s the hotel’s birthday today—happy anniversary!

In the lobby, there were many traditional Japanese toys on display, and it was wonderful to see how much interest they sparked in the guests. People enjoyed interacting with items like origami and kendama, and it was heartwarming to see such a variety of smiles. Some guests took their time enjoying origami, while others eagerly tried their hand at kendama, resulting in a lot of excitement.

There were also Japanese families having fun with the activities, and before I knew it, three hours had flown by. I truly had a fantastic time, and it made me so happy to see the guests, as well as the hotel staff, enjoying themselves.

Above all, I am thrilled to have been able to contribute to this joyful experience for both the guests and the hotel. I look forward to continuing to participate in more fun events like this in the future. Thank you so much for this opportunity.
