Rainy or Hot Days Fun in Kyoto : Try “Daruma Otoshi” Indoor Play!
Have you ever seen this traditional Japanese toy? It’s called Daruma Otoshi.
The daruma doll is a lucky charm in Japan, believed to encourage people who are working hard to make their wishes come true. In this game, a daruma doll is placed on top of a tall stack of wooden balls, and the challenge is to knock out the balls one by one with a small hammer—without letting the daruma fall.
It may sound simple, but even adults often find it surprisingly difficult! At the same time, some small children can clear it with ease, which makes the game even more exciting and fun to watch. In a way, it feels a little like Jenga, but with a uniquely Japanese twist.
I absolutely love this toy♪
Daruma Otoshi has been enjoyed in Japan for generations, and almost every Japanese person knows it. However, opportunities to actually play it are becoming rare these days. Still, once people try it, both children and adults quickly become completely absorbed in the challenge. Many visitors even buy one as a souvenir to take home.
If you visit Kyoto, please give Daruma Otoshi a try. You might discover that you’re surprisingly good at it!
You can experience it at AriHana Kyoto, located near Kiyomizu-dera. No reservation is needed, so feel free to stop by anytime!
Our indoor space is fully air-conditioned, making it perfect for families with babies and kids to relax on rainy or hot days!
Experience Traditional Japanese Games in Kyoto | Family-Friendly Indoor Activity at AriHana Kyoto
Looking for a fun indoor activity in Kyoto for families, kids, and travelers? AriHana Kyoto is a unique indoor playground and Japanese cultural experience where children and adults can enjoy traditional Japanese games together while learning about Japan’s culture in a fun and interactive way.
Have you ever tried traditional Japanese toys and games?
One of the most famous Japanese traditional activities is origami. In Japan, many children start learning origami at preschool or kindergarten around the age of 2 or 3. Folding paper with your fingertips may seem simple, but origami ranges from very easy creations to highly detailed and challenging designs. Completing an origami piece brings a wonderful sense of achievement, and each handmade creation becomes a special memory. It is one of the best cultural activities in Kyoto for kids and adults alike.
Another popular traditional Japanese game is kendama. Although not widely known overseas, kendama is a classic Japanese toy loved throughout Japan. Players balance and catch a ball connected by a string using three cups and a spike. There are many techniques and tricks to master, but even beginners can immediately enjoy the excitement of landing the ball on the cup. In Japan, many elementary school children play kendama, and kids are often surprisingly skilled!
Daruma Otoshi is another exciting traditional Japanese game that families love. Players carefully knock out wooden blocks with a hammer while trying to keep the daruma doll balanced on top. If the daruma falls, the game is over! Children and adults can enjoy this game together, making it a perfect family-friendly activity in Kyoto.
At AriHana Kyoto, we offer many hands-on Japanese cultural activities for visitors of all ages. Whether you are visiting Kyoto with family, looking for indoor activities on a rainy day, or searching for authentic Japanese experiences, AriHana Kyoto is the perfect place to create unforgettable travel memories.

At first, many participants said, “That looks so easy!”—but once they tried, they realized it was quite challenging. However, as soon as they got the hang of it, they began to succeed again and again, celebrating together and even trying more advanced tricks.
In addition to Kendama, guests also enjoyed other classic Japanese games such as Daruma Otoshi and Tosenkyo. It was wonderful to see adults having just as much fun as children.

Try a Traditional Japanese Game: Tosenkyo in Kyoto! 🇯🇵
We recently added a new traditional toy to our collection — Tosenkyo, a classic and elegant Japanese fan-throwing game.
Tosenkyo is a traditional Japanese game that has been enjoyed for centuries. It was especially popular in Kyoto entertainment culture, where adults played it with geiko and maiko.
The rules are simple but surprisingly exciting.
Players throw a folding fan toward a small target called a “butterfly” placed on a box. Points are scored depending on how the fan and the target fall after the throw. The different shapes they create have poetic names, making the game both playful and artistic.
Even just hitting the butterfly or knocking it down creates a lot of excitement!
Since this is a traditional game that is not easy to experience elsewhere, we invite you to try this unique Japanese cultural activity in Kyoto.
At AriHana Kyoto, located near Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Sanjusangendo, we offer a family-friendly indoor play space where both children and adults can enjoy traditional Japanese culture together.
