category information

Setsubun is a traditional Japanese festival marking the beginning of spring, celebrated by throwing beans to drive away evil spirits.
During Setsubun, people participate in mame-maki, where they throw roasted beans to drive away evil spirits.
During Setsubun, people shout ‘Oni wa soto!’ which means ‘Demons out!’ as they throw beans to drive away evil spirits.
While shouting ‘Fuku wa uchi!’ (‘Fortune in!’), people invite good luck into their homes.
Fukumame are roasted soybeans eaten during Setsubun to bring good fortune, with people typically eating as many beans as their age for luck in the coming year.

At AriHana Kyoto, you can enjoy traditional Japanese activities such as origami and kendama. Origami, a popular activity, is easy to try and perfect for a fun, hands-on experience. Our space is also ideal for kids to play and explore, making it a great choice for families. Whether you’re looking for an indoor activity during your Kyoto sightseeing, a rainy day, or a cold day, come experience Japanese culture at AriHana Kyoto. No reservation needed!
