Recently, we have welcomed many wonderful families from the United States, Italy, Chile, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, and many other countries.
Children from 8 months to 11 years old have been enjoying traditional Japanese play with their families, and it has been a joy to see so many smiles from around the world.
Origami is one of our most popular activities. Younger children enjoy folding paper with their parents, while some older children and adults tell us they learned origami in their own countries and enjoy making new creations with our origami books.
Kendama and Daruma Otoshi are always full of excitement, but one game has become an unexpected favorite—Fukuwarai. Many people think it is just for children, but parents often end up laughing just as much as their kids!
Every family enjoys traditional Japanese play in their own way, and that’s one of the things we love most about AriHana Kyoto.
Seeing children from so many different countries enjoy traditional Japanese play reminds us why we opened AriHana Kyoto. We hope many more families will discover the fun of Japanese play and create happy memories in Kyoto.
A 20-Month-Old Guest Visited Us on a Rainy Day in Kyoto
Kyoto’s rainy season ended 11 days earlier than usual this year, and the hot summer days have arrived.
During the summer in Kyoto, traveling with small children can sometimes be difficult. On very hot days or when it suddenly rains, families may wonder where they can spend some relaxing time together.
The other day, a family visited AriHana Kyoto with their 1-year-and-8-month-old daughter.
At first, she looked a little nervous in this new place. She stayed close to her parents and quietly looked around. But little by little, she became more comfortable. Soon, she started showing us her smile and even shared her little voice with us.
What stayed in my mind most was how often she brought me picture books.
She would bring a book to me and look at me as if she was saying, “Can you read this with me?” Turning the pages together was such a small moment, but it made me very happy.
A few days later, we received a lovely review from her family.
They shared that their daughter enjoyed playing with many different toys, and that they also had fun trying traditional Japanese games and making origami.
They also wrote that AriHana Kyoto was a comfortable place to spend a rainy afternoon in Kyoto. I was truly happy to hear that.
AriHana Kyoto is not only a place for children to play. I hope it can be a place where parents and children, and the whole family, can enjoy Japanese play together.
That is why it meant so much to me that everyone in the family found their own way to enjoy their time here.
Rainy days in Kyoto can make it difficult to decide where to go, especially with young children. If AriHana Kyoto can become a place where families can take a break and enjoy being together, that would make me very happy.
Thank you again for visiting AriHana Kyoto and for sharing such a kind review.

Families Connected Through Traditional Japanese Play at a Hotel Event
Yesterday, we held a traditional Japanese play event at a hotel in Kyoto.
Families visiting Kyoto from the UK, the United States, and other countries joined us, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere throughout the event.
For many guests, it was their first time trying kendama. Although they found it challenging, they continued practicing with enthusiasm. One of the most memorable moments was seeing families who had never met before celebrating each other’s successes and sharing tips on how to improve. Whenever someone succeeded, spontaneous applause and cheers would spread through the room, creating a warm sense of connection among the guests.
The children were especially impressive at daruma otoshi. While many adults found it difficult, the children repeatedly achieved perfect rounds with ease, drawing surprised reactions from everyone around them.
Guests also enjoyed a variety of traditional Japanese activities, including origami, tosenkyo, and fukuwarai. Each family spent time exploring the activities at their own pace and enjoying a unique cultural experience together.
One of the wonderful things about traditional Japanese play is that it can bring people together even when they do not share the same language. During the event, we saw guests naturally start conversations, encourage one another, and celebrate each other’s achievements. The entire room was filled with smiles and a warm, friendly atmosphere.
At the end of the event, we took commemorative photos together, and we were delighted to hear many guests say, “That was so much fun!”
At AriHana Kyoto, we share the joy of traditional Japanese play not only in our play space but also through special events like this. We hope this experience became one of the cherished memories of our guests’ trip to Kyoto.
Traditional Japanese Play for Traveling Families | FAQ
Recently, a family visiting from Israel came to AriHana Kyoto with their 10-month-old baby boy.

Meanwhile, his parents relaxed on the tatami floor, watching him play with warm smiles. Near the end of their one-month trip around Japan, they laughed and said, “We’re tired!”

Rainy or Hot Days Fun in Kyoto : Try “Daruma Otoshi” Indoor Play!
Have you ever seen this traditional Japanese toy? It’s called Daruma Otoshi.
The daruma doll is a lucky charm in Japan, believed to encourage people who are working hard to make their wishes come true. In this game, a daruma doll is placed on top of a tall stack of wooden balls, and the challenge is to knock out the balls one by one with a small hammer—without letting the daruma fall.
It may sound simple, but even adults often find it surprisingly difficult! At the same time, some small children can clear it with ease, which makes the game even more exciting and fun to watch. In a way, it feels a little like Jenga, but with a uniquely Japanese twist.
I absolutely love this toy♪
Daruma Otoshi has been enjoyed in Japan for generations, and almost every Japanese person knows it. However, opportunities to actually play it are becoming rare these days. Still, once people try it, both children and adults quickly become completely absorbed in the challenge. Many visitors even buy one as a souvenir to take home.
If you visit Kyoto, please give Daruma Otoshi a try. You might discover that you’re surprisingly good at it!
You can experience it at AriHana Kyoto, located near Kiyomizu-dera. No reservation is needed, so feel free to stop by anytime!
